How to Grow Day Lilies Inside During the Winter
- 1). Fill a pot that is at least twice as large as the root ball of the day lily plant with a mixture of half potting soil and half rich compost.
- 2). Scoop out a hole large enough for the roots to fit comfortably in and transfer the plant to the pot. Cover up the roots and press the soil down around the plant.
- 3). Water the plant until the water runs out of the bottom of the pot and into the tray. Keep the soil moist always.
- 4). Mist the plant everyday to keep it humid and moist.
- 5). Water day lily plants every two to three days. Take care to not water the delicate stems of the plant.
- 6). Place the day lily plant away from drafty windows and heaters, on a windowsill or table that faces the east, south or west.
- 7). Fertilize your indoor plants once a month during the winter, as recommended by the Department of Horticulture at Purdue University. Apply a half-strength, water-soluble fertilizer. You don't want the plant to create too many leaves without blossoms over the winter through overfertilization.
- 8). Deadhead dying or dead blossoms by pinching them with your fingers or using a pair of scissors.
