How do I Sharpen a Chipper Mulcher?
- 1). Unplug the chipper. Open the cover to the chipper. Depending on the manufacturer, the cover will have screws holding it on, or tabs along the side to pull. The chipper has a spark plug inside the engine. The spark plug is connected to the engine by wires, typically two. Unplug the wire from the spark plug to ensure that the chipper does not turn on while you are working on it.
- 2). Remove the chute support braces by unscrewing the bolts or screws that hold the chute support braces onto the chipper itself. There are typically two to three screws or bolts.
- 3). Unscrew the nuts and bolts that hold the chipper chute in place. Remove the chipper chute.
- 4). Wear protective gloves for this step to protect yourself from cuts. Rotate the chipper blade mechanism, or the part of the chipper that turns the blades, until you can see a blade. Once you see a blade, stop rotating and remove the screws or bolts that hold that blade down. Continue to turn the mechanism until the next blade is located and remove each blade in turn.
- 5). Wear protective goggles and sharpen each blade using a grinding wheel. Follow the natural angle of the blade when sharpening.
- 6). Replace blades, chipper chute, and braces in the order that they were removed. Rewire the spark plug. Test your chipper mulcher.
