Hello Sunshine
by Lety Soto CMA
Summer is here and we all can't wait to be out enjoying the beautiful weather, but let's be sun safe. Before we start our summer activities there are a few simple things we can do to help us from being burned by harmful UV rays.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME: The sun is the strongest between 10am and 4pm, try to plan your activities before or after but if you are out at those times seek shade whenever possible. DRESS FOR DEFENSE: Recent research shows that the right clothing can be more effective than sunscreen. Look fashionable and be sun safe with a broad rimmed hat and UV blocking sunglasses. Tightly woven fabrics are the best protection for the skin. If you can see through it when held up to the light, then the sun's rays are going through it as well. Dark and brightly colored fabrics protect more than pastels or light colored ones and loose clothing gives more protection than tight stretchy clothes that allow light through. You can get UV absorbing clothes in various styles; they come with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings that indicate how much UV rays it absorbs. A 20 UPF allow 1/20th of UV rays to pass through. You can even sun proof your own wardrobe with special detergents that will launder the UV protection into the fabric of your own clothes. BRING SUNBLOCK: A broad spectrum sun block is essential to sun safety! The sun's harmful rays are the main cause of premature aging and skin cancer. Make sure your sun block protects against UVA and UVB rays like Cosmic Ray Shield SPF 36 Your Skin's Solar Defense. Apply 2 tablespoons 30 minutes before sun exposure and bring it with you. SEEK SHADE: Find a spot that's covered or create your own shade with an umbrella and remember your hat. REAPPLY: No matter how high an SPF or if it says super long lasting or waterproof sun block must be reapplied. It's best to reapply every 2 hours when exposed to the sun for an extended period of time or immediately after swimming or heavy exercising.
Follow these simple steps for the safest fun in the sun all year long.
