How to Get Rust Stains Out of Laundry
- 1). Dampen a clean sponge with undiluted white distilled vinegar. Saturate the rust stain with the vinegar.
- 2). Sprinkle a generous amount of table salt on top of the vinegar. Rub it into the stain using your finger or the sponge.
- 3). Lay the garment or fabric outside if it is a sunny day until the vinegar has dried. The sun will aid in drawing the rust from the fabric. If it is not sunny outside, air dry the fabric inside of the house.
- 4). Wash the garment as you normally would according to the label instructions for the fabric.
- 1). Place several paper towels on the back of the rust stain to prevent it from spreading and to absorb the cleaning solution.
- 2). Pour undiluted lemon juice directly onto the rust stain. Use a generous amount of lemon juice, either from fresh lemons or a bottle.
- 3). Lay the fabric in the sunlight to dry or someplace warm inside if the sun is not shining brightly outside. Once the lemon juice has dried, launder as usual according to the manufacturer's instructions
- 4). A variation on this method is to mix lemon juice and a generous amount of table salt together in a bowl. Rub the mixture over the rust stain with a toothbrush, reapplying the mixture as necessary. Rinse the fabric with cold water and then rub a clear, liquid laundry detergent into the stain using the toothbrush. Launder as usual once the stain is removed.
- 1). Cover the rust stain with cream of tartar powder. Only use this method on white laundry. You can find cream of tartar near the spices in most grocery stores.
- 2). Gather the edges of the fabric around the rust stain to keep the powder localized to the rust spot. Dip the rust spot into a pot or bowl filled with hot water.
- 3). Soak the fabric in the water for five minutes. Remove from the water and wash the fabric as usual.
