How to Carve Furniture From a Palm Tree Trunk
- 1). Draw a 20-by-20-inch square on the top of the palm tree trunk with a marker. Position the square starting at the front edge of the trunk. The area behind the square will become the backrest. The areas on either side of the square will become the arm rests.
- 2). Grind the square away from the stump with an angle grinder. Work in sections. Start at the right of the square and cut grooves into the turn approximately 24 inches deep. After the first cut, move over and cut another groove 24 inches deep. Continue this until you remove the front edge of the trunk. After that, work your way back and over until you remove the entire section from the trunk.
- 3). Smooth the sharp edges of the chair with the angle grinder. This is called rounding over the edges. Take the angle grinder and created a curved surface over the edges of the seat rest and armrest.
- 4). Paint a polyurethane hard coat onto the surface of the tree without bark to protect the wood from decaying. If you want the trunk to age into a gray color, do not add the polyurethane.
