How Can I Enter the Theta State?
- 1). Find a quiet place. Entering the theta state requires deep meditation, and you need to be able to concentrate to do that. Finding a calm space will help you to free yourself from any distractions. Find a quiet room. Turn off your television, computer, phone and anything noisy that could cause your mind to wander.
- 2). Relax. Find a comfortable position. Sit upright on a pillow or chair with your back straight. Some find it more relaxing to lie down, face up, on a flat surface. Choose whichever position is most comfortable for you. It is more important that you choose a position that allows you to relax your muscles than adopting the "perfect" meditation pose at first. Many people recommend sitting as up as it is easy to fall asleep if you meditate lying down.
- 3). Focus on your breathing. Though the eventual goal of meditation is to clear the mind, this is difficult for most people, especially those new to the practice of meditation. Concentrating on and being aware of your breath will help focus and stabilize your mind. Exhale and inhale deeply and slowly and try to pay close attention to each breath. Feel your ribcage expand as air fills your lungs and feel your chest fall as you release your breath again.
- 4). Empty your mind. Throughout the day our minds are constantly active with thoughts that may be creative, irritating, or even stressful. But to reach a state of deep meditation, you need to get rid of all of these thoughts whether good or bad. Though difficult, clearing your mind is a key step in reaching the theta state. It takes discipline, but when you are able to silence your mind you will be closer to a relaxed state of mind.
- 5). Play your binaural beats. Normally, it takes strong discipline to reach a theta state through meditation, but through the practice of brain entrainment it is possible to enter that state by simply listening to an MP3. By listening to certain frequencies in each ear, you can coax your brain into entering the theta state. These frequencies are called binaural beats. You can download them or buy a CD. Listen to them with headphones.
