Cruise vacations are one of the more varied and affordable vacation options. Most cruises include all meals, overnight accommodations, onboard activities, and transportation between ports of call. Additional expenses typically include airfare, drinks and snacks between meals, shore excursions, optional activities and special services, such as massage and spa services. - Cruise vacations vary in duration, from as brief as three days to three months. The length of your cruise depends largely on your destination and preferred vacation time. Transatlantic cruises are typically longer than domestic cruises, with the most popular cruises ranging from seven to 14 days.
- Cruises are available virtually anywhere in the world. Most three- to eight-day cruises departing from the U.S. travel to the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Mexico and Alaska. Cruises of 10 days or more travel to Europe and the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, South East Asia, Africa, Australia, and a host of other international locations.

There are several different types of cruises, including themed cruises, island-resort cruises, adventure and luxury globetrotting cruises. There are also cruises specifically designed for singles, families, and childless couples. For example, while honeymooners might prefer an adults-only cruise with an enhanced romance theme, parents with children might prefer a family-friendly cruise, with activities for young children and teens, as well as adults. - While ship activities vary by cruise type, typical activities include swimming, sunbathing, fine dining, dancing, casino gaming, and nightly live entertainment. Most ships also have a spa and fitness center, in addition to several lounges and even a movie theater. If you take a themed cruise---such as a murder mystery cruise--many activities will be theme-related, though all activities are optional.

Depending on where you go, you can do just about anything at a port of call. If you visit a tropical location, you can learn to snorkel, scuba dive or water ski. At historical locations, you can take guided tours of ancient ruins, visit the pyramids, explore the cobblestoned streets of Amalfi, Italy, or the white sand beaches of Santorini, Greece. Take in the local cuisine at one of the many recommended restaurants, shop for bargains at open-air markets, or take a day excursion to the Parthenon. In other words, no matter where you go, you will likely have many activities to choose from. Just remember to make it back to the ship before it sets sail.
