How to Treat Shortness of Breath From Ascites
- 1). Lie down frequently. This is one of the main treatments prescribed for shortness of breath from ascites. Lying down reduces the amount of salt your kidneys take in. A diet high in salt is believed to contribute to the fluid build-up.
- 2). Reduce your salt intake. You may need to cut down your salt intake to around two to five grams per day, depending on what your doctor recommends. It is best to see a nutritionist who can point out foods to avoid.
Some foods that are low in salt include: white and whole-grain breads, graham crackers, most pastas, Monterey and Mozzarella cheese and fresh fruits and vegetables. - 3). Take diuretics or water pills. A doctor will prescribe the proper amount of diuretics you should take. Diuretics help get rid of extra fluid in your body by making you urinate more.
- 4). Weigh yourself everyday. If you gain more than two pounds per day for three days, consult your doctor. More fluid may be accumulating.
- 5). Undergo surgery. In extreme cases, paracentisis is required. In this procedure, a needle is inserted into the abdomen to remove excess fluid.
Doctors may prescribe repeated paracentisis to keep fluid down. - 6). Continue resting, reducing salt intake and taking diuretics after surgery. If you do not, it is likely fluid will begin to build up again.
