Some federal grants for cars specifically target car usage, while other grants are more concerned with vehicular safety and assistive technology. Depending on the grant, the target group, requirements and eligibility may also differ. To qualify for such grants, individuals may have to file several documents and should be a part of a certain group population. - The Automobiles and Adaptive Equipment for Certain Disabled Veterans and Members of the Armed Forces is under the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Office of Veterans Benefits Administration. The objective of the program is to provide financial support to veterans and people with disabilities in purchasing assistive technologies, including automobiles. Further, the program also provides financial support for additional amounts required to install other adaptive equipment in favor of the veteran or disabled individual. It's important to note though that this grant only provides a one-time payment. It cannot be used for another purchase of automobile and other assistive conveyance. Veterans are required to pass proof of service and certification if they have been disabled while on duty.
- The Sale of Federal Surplus Personal Property program is under the agency of General Services Administration. The main objective of the program is to sell Government properties that are no longer needed. Specifically, these properties should be sold in an efficient and economical way to allow the government to get the highest possible net return from sales. Consequently, the General Services Administration agency handles surplus property sales for many civil agencies, while the Department of Defense is independent in selling its properties. Surplus personal properties include aircraft, vehicles, medical equipment, hardware and furniture. This grant provides a project type of assistance.
- The National Motor Carrier Safety program is under the Department of Transportation and the Office of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The main objective of the program is to help lessen the number of vehicular-related accidents. Specifically, the grant is targeting risk reduction in materials comprising commercial motor vehicles. Further, the program seeks to implement enforcement activities that efficiently identify driver deficiencies, vehicular safety defects and unsafe carrier practices. This type of assistance is a formula grant. This grant is accordance with the Motor Carrier Safety Reauthorization Act of 2005, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 and the Motor Carrier Act of 1991.
