How to Build a Compost Bin for Outdoors

    Round Bin

    • 1). Construct a basic round wire compost bin from 4-foot high woven wire fencing. Woven wire fencing comes in various sized rolls from 50 feet to 330 feet long. Cut a 12-foot section of the fence using the wire pliers. Make the cut in the center of the horizontal wire. The two equal halves of the horizontal wires are used to wrap around the vertical mating edges.

    • 2). Roll the fence into a 4-foot diameter circle. Bend the wires over the vertical mating edge to secure the cage together.

    • 3). Place the wire compost over existing garden beds. Fill the cage with vegetable and yard debris. Duplicate the cage design to create multiple bins for compost rotation.

    Square Bin

    • 1). Make a 4-foot square permanent compost bin using wood snow fencing. Pound the first tee post into the ground. The first post will be one corner of the compost bin. Use the tape measure and place the second post in a straight line from the first, 46 inches away. Pound this second post in the ground.

    • 2). Secure the wood snow fence to the two tee posts with the tie wire. Use the wire pliers and twist a 4-inch long piece of wire to hold the snow fence to the post. Tie the fence at both the top and the bottom.

    • 3). Measure another 46 inches from the second tee post along the snow fence. Bend the fence in a right angle. Measure another 46 inches from that bend in the fence. Bend the fence again. You should now have a square shape bent into the fencing. Adjust the fence so the compost bin lines up with the first tee post in the ground.

    • 4). Install the last 2 tee posts on the inside corners of the bin. Secure the fencing in the same manner as described in step 2 above.

    • 5). Place your compost bin where it will go and add composting material to it.
