There are two main types of hemorrhoids, external and internal.
Both of them can become more severe if left untreated.
A severe external hemorrhoid is commonly called as thrombosed.
External ones are located outside the anus.
Most often than not, they surround the opening of the anus, to generally describe it, it is a lump that can be found outside the anus.
You can feel it with your hands and see it with your naked eye.
They can be like peas, soft and small-sized.
But on the other hand, they can also be marble-like, hard and big.
They are mostly reddish in color and are usually not painful.
However, when a blood clot forms inside an external hemorrhoid, it turns into a more severe one called thrombosed.
This type is generally painful because of the blood clot and can sometimes be reddish or purplish in color.
Blood clots happen when the blood flow becomes restricted in the veins when you have external hemorrhoids.
So instead of it flowing, it pools and creates blood clots.
The color changes from red to purple or blue because of the strangulation of the veins which means blood cannot pass through them.
When they get irritated, they can also turn into a more reddish color.
A thrombosed hemorrhoid is not considered to be dangerous and life threatening.
However, they can be really painful and they tend to swell more than the regular ones.
There is a slight possibility that it will go away on its own over a period of time like a month or so.
But if this is not the case and the case worsens, one might need a surgical procedure to remove it.
There are several choices for this, however it should be done by a doctor because of the bleeding involved.
