Which Hair Growth Products Work?

103 5
All you have to do is conduct a search online and you will be able to find literally thousands of products that are advertised to help you re-grow the hair you have lost.
One would think that with all these products available we would never see any bald men but that is not the case.
So why do we have so many options available and so little results? The fact is, most of these hair growth products do not really treat the cause of hair loss so there is no way they will be able to solve the problem.
The vast majority of men who are balding have a condition known as Androgenetic Alopecia also referred to as Male Pattern Baldness, MPB.
There are other reasons for hair loss such as medical treatments, accidents, and hormonal problems but the main cause in the US is MPB.
If a product doesn't treat the cause of the baldness there is no way it will be able to offer relief from the embarrassing condition of balding and hair thinning.
Of all the products on the market, the US Food and Drug Administration has only approved two drugs for the treatment of hair loss.
Although there may be some other products available that will work the only two that have been tested and approved by the government is Finasteride, marketed usually as Propecia, and Minoxidil, marketed as Rogaine.
Finasteride is taken orally on a daily basis and comes in tablet form.
It was originally developed as a treatment for male enlarged prostate.
During trials it was found that treating urinary tract problems also lead to a slowing down of hair loss and actually some revitalization of dormant hair follicles with resulting new hair growth.
This drug is not prescribed to women, though, because the active ingredients may cause birth defects in male fetuses.
Finasteride is effective at treating hair loss but there are some other side effects you need to discuss with your doctor.
The second drug, Minoxidil, is applied as a topical solution.
This means it is rubbed into the scalp usually twice a day.
It is thought that this drug works by increasing the blood flow to the hair follicles thus keeping them healthy.
This makes sense as it was originally developed as a blood pressure medication that worked to increase the size of the tiny blood vessels in the body.
This seems to be why it is effective at helping hair follicles to continue to manufacture hair shaft material.
