The old Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, California is slightly off the beaten path. It doesn't lie on the major corridor from San Diego County to Orange County or San Diego to Riverside. Instead it's silhouette graces the hillsides of the northern most part of Oceanside, a few miles east of the coast and at the back yard of Camp Pendleton. San Diego is rooted in the history of the Mission San Luis Rey which was a major hospitality stop for travelers of El Camino Real.
Founded in 1798, this mission was known as the "King ofthe Missions" throughout for it's size and contribution. In the past few years, the hidden jewel has had a bit of a revival in the community. There is a renewed reminder of it's existence. The Mission's previous Executive Director, Br. James Lockman, ofm, had a vision of returning full circle with the Mission as the center of gathering for the community of Oceanside and beyond. Events such as the Dia de los Muertos festival has given the Mission visibility to an expansive audience it may not otherwise have had. Thousands of people will descend upon the grounds of Mission San Luis Rey on Sunday, October 31st, to celebrate a cultural tradition that honors passed loved ones. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is traditionally observed on November 2nd. This is a time to remember and enjoy the lives of those family members and friends who are so dear to our hearts.
The festival is a colorful and vibrant celebration of music, entertainment, food, children's activities and remembrance. As an attendee you can expect to stroll the historic archways of the Mission filled with ofrendas (altars), view the 40+ classic car show, each with a beautiful altar in the trunk, watch the entertainment on stage, eat Pan de Muerto, admire the artwork of the many talented artists attending, create a remembrance of your own to a loved one in the chalk cemetery.
The festival is FREE and open to the public beginning at 10am - 4pm. Parking on-site has a fee of $5. This is a family-friendly event. Sunscreen and carpooling are both highly advisable. Much of the traffic congestion last year was on the 76 freeway at the Rancho Del Oro exit. Check mapquest for possible other routes to avoid the bottle neck.
All proceeds from the festival benefit the continuation of programs at the National Historic Landmark which receives all funding through private donations and grants.
