Why Should You Backup Your Computer Files?

101 5
Forget the notion that you're just an average computer user who doesn't need to backup your computer files. Not only companies or individuals who have top-secret or financial information such as government agencies, banks, or criminal investigation units need to backup computer files, all of us do. After all, isn't our own work, a year's collection of family photos, or a compilation of our favorite songs gathered and painstakingly categorized, important as well? True, the loss of these files may not affect other people, but the effect of such loss on you would be devastating. In this digital age, your computer files are part of your life.

Some have kept certain files for years. And this was always done in the same old process. First, you buy a stack of floppy disks or CDs which can be costly. You organize your files in such a way that everything in one category would fit into the disk space. Then, you label each disk before finally storing the information - which usually takes lots of space and hours of time. In storing your files, you need to be extra careful since a few scratches or a several drops of water could be enough to erase all your hard work and stored data. You may buy a protective safe for your disks but this would mean additional expenses on your part.

It's a good thing that recent developments in technology have given way to better methods when it comes to data backups and storage. External hard drives are already available that allow you to just plug and backup. It has become as simple as that. And your files are organized exactly the way they were in your computer's hard drive so the process should only take a few minutes of your time. External hard drives also let you store so much data -- up to several terabytes. For many who don't have an idea how big a terabyte is, one terabyte can hold up to 200,000 photos at 5MB each.

But not everyone wants to run out and buy a new, and often expensive, hard drive. While it lets you keep all of your files with you, which offers some comfort to most people, it can be a bit daunting for some people.

The good news is, there are companies which provide user-friendly ways to store your data online. Through their services, you can back-up your computer by using their storage devices. You do not have to worry about getting your files hacked because most of these companies house their servers in highly protected areas which make them nearly immune to corruption or damage. Your files are definitely kept safer with them than keeping them inside your office room.

Whichever method you use to backup your computer doesn't really matter. Just do something to keep your computer data secure! If you use an online service such as Mozy backup, it is very affordable (less than $5/month) and they take care of all the work for you.
