I Am An African American Boy
I AM AN AFRICAN AMERICAN BOY
I am an African American Boy
I have waded through the darkness for what seems like eternity,
searching,
always searching.
Searching for the way it should be, but find no one to lead me.
Searching for the future I hope to have, but find no one to show me.
Searching for a hero to follow, but find no hero who will step up.
Searching for the father I never knew, but find that I know not where to look.
I am an African American boy.
Confused,
unwanted
abandoned,
and constantly searching.
Searching for answers as to why those who claim to lead, never do,
why those who claim to show me, never find the time,
why those who claim to step up, never come around.
I am an African American boy.
I am the new symbol of a noble cause that has lost it's way.
I am an African American boy, and I am searching,
still searching,
after all these years, searching
to make that Dream of Dr. King a reality for me.
-----------------
Who will have the courage.
Who will have the courage to step up?
Who, among all the African American men who shine in the limelight,
profit from their notoriety, or have been blessed to be guided.
Who among the fortunate will step up and organize, set the example and be a leader not on the court or field but where it really counts.
Who will take charge and start a new movement, a movement that picks up from where the old movement left off. That noble movement of old that encouraged young people to dream big and to be the best they can be.
Whoever has the courage, whoever has the will to sacrifice, your children are waiting.
Still waiting.
Waiting as they have done for so many decades past.
Still waiting to make that Dream of Dr. King a reality for them.
