How to Save for College in This Economy...
We all know money is tight right now. Even those families with savings, it seems smarter to save it instead of spend it, with the fear that things might get worse before they get better. Investng money is a terrifying thought with the instability of the US Economy.
But let's face it...it's depressing when the purpose of going to work each day, or doing something to make a little extra, is just to put food on the table and pay the electric bill. Get up and go to work just so you can come home, sleep, and get up and do it again. What about the future of our kids? Do you lay awake at night thinking about it like I do?
A college education is key to a more secure future. There are no guarantees of course, but a degree can open up opportunities for young people that aren't a possibility for those without one.
But how can any of us save for college right now?
We used to try using our regular savings account to save for college, but needed to dip into it way too often for that to be effective.
The "out of sight, out of mind" theory holds true to saving money, I think this we can all agree upon.
So we opened an online savings account (you can Google this to find many different companies to choose from) that we can only access online. There's the out of sight part...can't get to it with an ATM card or stopping in at the local bank.
But where does the money come from? The KEY to saving in this way is to have a funding source that ONLY funds the card by being linked to it directly. For me, it's my Clickbank account. Everytime I make any money with my affiliate marketing account (usually between $200 and $400 a week, sometimes more or less), it gets deposited into the account. It's linked so all I have to do is click my mouse a few times and the money goes from my Clickbank account to my savings account.
Of course, you don't NEED an online savings to do this-if you're disciplined enough you can use a regular savings account from your local bank. Just make sure you link it directly and your money can only go to that account.
So don't cheat your children. They are already going to inherit the massive National Debt...let's at least give them the platform of a college education to get a head of the game. You just need to find a way to not only MAKE a little extra, but to save it at the same time.
