How to Build a Kiwi Arbor

    • 1). Choose a place for your kiwi arbor that is located in full sun, out of the way of strong winds. The soil should be well-draining. Dig four evenly spaced holes for the posts, in the shape of a square. Make the holes 1 1/2 to 2 feet deep in a diameter a little narrower than the diameter of the wooden posts (for a tighter fit). When spacing the posts, keep in mind how large you want the arbor. On average, kiwi arbors are about 3 to 5 feet wide.

    • 2). Divide up the gravel equally. Use more for soils that are loose and soft, and less for harder, clay-like soils. Layer the gravel into the bottom of each post hole for more friction.

    • 3). Insert the wooden posts into the holes one at a time. Push each one in until the post hits the bottom of the hole and makes contact with the gravel. If the post resists, turn it counterclockwise to screw it in.

    • 4). Drill three evenly spaced holes on the front face of each post. Insert an eye into each hole, then insert the screws.

    • 5). Thread the wire through the first row of eyes, pulling it taut through all four posts. Hold it tight, then cut it with the wire cutters. Wrap the wire a couple of times around the top of that post to secure it. Repeat this process with the second and third rows, to create the top of the arbor where the kiwi vines will eventually cross over and connect.

    • 6). Plant the kiwi vines according to the directions of the variety you are planting, on the outside corner of each post. For minimal coverage, plant one kiwi vine on each side of the kiwi arbor, directly between the two posts. For maximum coverage, plant four kiwi plants, one at the base of each arbor post. Trellis the kiwi vines loosely with plant ties anywhere you can on the wooden posts to begin training them.
