Are Lilies Deer Resistant?
- Increasing deer populations, urban encroachment, and deer-hunting limitations are factors in the growing incidence of damage to ornamental plants by deer, states the West Virginia University Extension. Deer attack certain plants based on habit, nutritional needs, plant desirability and weather conditions.
- Deer attack the various species of lilies, including oriental, asiatic and daylilies. Tiger lilies appear on the University of Vermont Extension Service's list as being deer resistant. But as stated by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, no plant is entirely deer-proof, and deer will eat anything if they're starving.
- Repellant sprays can be effective if reapplied as often as possible, and the use of soap, human hair, and blood meal are somewhat effective in keeping deer away. But the most reliable and effective deterrent is fencing, says Bob Vila.
