Women and Development - The Barriers and Benefits

103 7
Women are the key of development.
They represent the majority of citizen, thus reflecting the majority demand that government should provide within the development framework.
Six from eight goals in Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) need direct and intense involvement of women to be success.
Hence, it is highly encouraged that women possess credible positions within the policy making process and political arena to produce policies which brings more space and opportunities for woman involvement in the society.
Yet, women participation in the parliament is still below the 30% quota, especially in developing countries.
The socio culture aspect may become the basic reason of the lack of women participation in developing countries.
In many Latin America and African countries women are positioned as a subordinate of men within the social structure of society.
Thus, it brings specification of duties within men and women that leads to stereotyping role of women.
The patriarchy system in the society along with its stereotyping role make barriers for women to empower themselves to do things beyond the domestic duties.
The socio culture aspect influences the political sphere within the government policy making process.
Men as majority in the parliament tend to produce such masculine, gender biased, and gender stereotyping policies.
They are inclined to focus on military and economic matters, whereas, women in the parliament are likely to have policy orientation upon peace, environment, social welfare, political representation, political awareness, and labors.
These political orientations that women concern are matters crucial to the development program.
Therefore, the presence of more women in the parliament is needed to uphold their interest and generate the supportive policies.
More women representation in the parliament can be accomplished by enhancing their political awareness and independency.
Education comes up as the solution to empower women and enhance their participation both in development program, society, and politics.
The higher level of education they could attain is opportunity to enhance their participation and empower themselves.
Better education improves women's knowledge, skill, and into some extent their political awareness to utter their aspirations.
Better education leads to various benefits both for women and the development program of the country.
The higher skills that women get through education give them opportunity to be formal worker to earn income for themselves.
This encourages women to be independent to put any decision upon herself, and her future family planning.
Then, it is not only men but also women contribute to raise the family income and welfare.
Thus, it is also benefiting the country by increasing the GDP.
The better education and job for women have impacts to reduce the poverty rate in the country.
The higher participation of women in the development program, brings opportunity to achieve gender equality within the social relations.
Women then become aware to their role in development program, and also have more awareness to themselves in terms of health.
This is a serious matter in developing countries where the mortality rate of maternal mother is high.
Women who are independent to make decision upon reproductive matters have better prospects to prioritize the family planning, nurture their children, thus enhance the children' health, and their health as well.
Indeed, all of the contributing subjects are matters to MDGs, and women are the key of development.
An initiation of encouraging and empowering women in a region will benefiting the others, because women tend to work in group, thus creating a global network of cooperation.
