Clear the Site

• Preparing the site takes effort, but it's a necessary step. Use a spade or flat shovel to unearth the top layer of grass and about 3 inches of dirt beneath it. Unearthing existing grass prevents roots from developing under the turf and causing it to bulge. It also allows the turn to sit at ground level for a natural look. Use a tamper or flat board to pack the subsoil down so it is hard and stable.
  
  

Lay the Base

• The gravel base sits between the subsoil and the turf. It compacts together to form a nearly solid, level surface while leaving enough crevices for underground moisture to drain. Use small gravel since larger rocks can protrude through turf, then spread a 1-inch deep layer with a rake.
  
  

Install Turf

• To lay the turf over gravel, set the beginning of a roll in one corner and slowly unroll it so the outer side is flush against the inner wall of the site. Use a sharpened utility knife to make a straight, smooth cut to eliminate any excess. Once each adjacent strip of turf is fitted and flush against the next, fold back the sides and lay down strips of seam tape over the entire length of the seam. Brush adhesive over the tape, and press the adjacent edges down so they are flush. Repeat this process with each seam, and add sand bags or other weights over the seams to hold the bond as the adhesive dries.
  
  

Finish Seams and Maintenance

• While adding a border around turf is optional, you must secure it by driving 6-inch nails through the turf about every 12 inches around the perimeter. As turf typically comes in large rolls, improve the final appearance by sweeping a wire brush across the strips to separate and stand the blades up. Plan to sweep and vacuum the turf regularly to maximize its appearance and lifespan.
