What Are Flower Skeletons?

104 2

    Types

    • Flower species come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as do their skeletons since the flower's skeleton is the frame for the petals. Some common forms of flower skeletons resemble bells, trumpets, cones, sprigs and eggs. Certain flower skeletons may appear similar to other flower species in the same plant family.

    Location

    • A simple way to view a flower skeleton is to search for wildflowers; these types of flowers grow in meadows, along roadsides and in pastures. Many desert flowers grow in remote areas; therefore, the desert flower's skeleton is intact and rarely disturbed. Search for garden flower skeletons during the late fall and early winter when flower petals yield to the change in weather.

    Uses

    • Flower skeletons are a subject many nature photographers use in photos to depict the changing of seasons from summer to winter. Many U.S. National Parks museums have flower skeletons sketched by nature artists on display. Flower field guides often have illustrations of flower skeletons to aid in the identification of wildflowers.
