How Does a T-Shirt Quilt Help Commemorate an Event?
- T-shirt quilts are a wonderful and creative way to commemorate special occasions. Usually made from 12 or more worn and loved T-shirts, these quilts are sewn together either by hand or by machine. After the T-shirts are sewn together, a batting can be put underneath and then a regular sheet sewn on the other side to make the quilt thicker and more comfortable.
The variety of quilts is only limited by your creativity and the kinds of T-shirts you possess. For a high-school graduation, a quilt can be made of school-spirit shirts, as in the illustration. A Mother's Day quilt can be made of T-shirts belonging to various members of the family.
For events such as fund raisers, T-shirts pertaining to the charity involved are appropriate. Other special events can also be commemorated by a T-shirt quilt. For someone who has made a baseball all-star team, a quilt made of previously worn team T-shirts would be especially meaningful.
T-shirt quilts are made by cutting out square pieces of the T-shirts and then stitching them together. However, if you are not the type who likes to sew, there are websites you can send your T-shirts to and have them made into a quilt. (See Resources.) Either method is relatively inexpensive, and the result is a beautiful, handmade item to commemorate an event.
