- 1). Listen to a selection of sounds produced by a mockingbird to get a feel and understanding of what it sounds like. For example, listen to the samples available at websites such as Bird Jam or Sound Bible.
- 2). Practice whistling loudly and boldly, as mockingbirds are not shy birds. Take a deep breath and practice blowing forcefully out of your lips. Use your cheeks to expel the air from your mouth.
- 3). Experiment with changing the pitch of you whistle. Birdsong varies between higher and lower notes, and are held for different amounts of time. If you have full control and command of the sounds you make, you will find it easier to mimic the calls of a mockingbird. Since its calls varies continuously, you need to increase the flexibility of your whistle.
- 4). Mimic a simple bird phrase. As a beginner, practice whistling a call that sounds like "whip-poor-will." Do not say the words, but make the shape of the words with your mouth to change how the whistle is formed. Again, vary the pitch and how long you hold each sound for.
- 5). Repeat the phrases you learn three or four times each and then swap to a different bird call. Mockingbirds change the noise they make regularly. Keep the calls you make varied by swapping them around.
