Put Your Mouth Where Your Money Is

Responsible businesses are involved in charity from a financial standpoint, giving what they can to support their charities of choice.
Some also get involved in community service work, like giving their employees time to volunteer in service organizations.
These are all laudable activities, but I think maybe we all should be doing more.
Friend Harry Hoover got me thinking about this after he launched a program this Christmas that he calls "Holiday For Charity.
" Harry, a communications professional, said that he may not have much money to donate but he does have some talent in communication.
So, he came up with the Holiday For Charity program and started promoting it.
It goes like this: instead of receiving holiday presents, ask your friends, family and business associates to donate to charity.
Harry wrote letters to the editor, wrote about it in his monthly e-newsletter, did news releases and set up a special area on his website that outlined how the program worked.
He also spoke about the program in front of some communications groups.
His efforts won some converts.
Now, those of you who have been through a public speaking course like ours program certainly have the tools to communicate about your favorite charities.
If you feel strongly enough about them, why not put your mouth where your money is? Not only does it spread the word about your charities, it gives you an opportunity to deliver a different kind of presentation than the same-old PowerPoint business presentation.
It gives you a chance to reveal a little something about yourself, a chance to unleash some passion.
I'm always saying that if you can't find any passion in your job, you need to look for it elsewhere.
What better place to find some passion than at a charity you support? So, harness that passion and get out there and be an evangelist for your charity of choice!
