How to Go Clubbing in New York
- 1). Decide whether you want to just wander around for places that look good, or plan ahead. If you are wandering, wear shoes that are made for walking. If planning, you will have more options to choose from, and you can more safely wear those stilettos you've been meaning to show off.
- 2). Choose a neighborhood. The Lower East Side and SoHo are your best bets for clubbing in New York. Trolling for night clubs in those neighborhoods is easy. If you plan to hit clubs that lie outside those areas, a little planning is advised, since clubs can be fewer and farther between and it's not a good idea to be walking in isolated areas.
- 3). Choose a theme. You can find plenty of Eighties Nights, techno, jazz, rock, hip hop, country and other night clubs in New York. Depending on the day of the week, you should be able to find exactly what you are looking for (see Resources below). If you would like to go to a predominantly black club, there are plenty of those as well.
- 4). Sift through the local newspapers to find event listings in New York for night clubs. Village Voice and Time Out are good bets (see Resources below). These publications are available in free street kiosks throughout the city. You can also check out some of the clubbing websites out there, some of which are extremely helpful in narrowing down your options and honing in on the type of experience you are looking for.
- 5). Go clubbing in pairs or groups. This will ensure you have a better time than if you are all alone, and it will keep you safer.
- 6). Carry cash. Many clubs in New York do not accept credit or debit cards, and those who do accept them usually require a minimum purchase of 10 or 20 dollars. Carrying cash will keep your options open for moving from one club to another.
- 7). Observe clubbing etiquette. Contrary to what the movies might lead you to believe, it is not culturally acceptable to grab a random stranger and attempt to dance or "grind" with them. Ask first. Be polite to bouncers, door men and bartenders.
