How to Register Unlicensed Tax Preparers

104 2
    • 1). Ask each preparer to verify their individual compliance with tax obligations. Before submitting an application for registration, each person must have filed all tax returns and paid any balances in full. If the preparer has balances due to the IRS, a formal payment plan or alternative arrangement must be established. The preparer can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 to verify his status.

    • 2). Apply for a PTIN for each preparer. Each employee who is preparing returns must complete an application for a PTIN. The application is available in paper and electronic formats.

    • 3). Complete the first page of the application. This section asks questions such as the perparer's name, address, identification information and filing status. The preparer will also answer questions concerning tax compliance and criminal history on this page.

    • 4). Complete business information. On the second page, fill in the address, phone number and website of your business.

    • 5). Pay the registration fee and submit application. If a paper application is prepared, mail the form and payment to:

IRS Tax Pro PTIN Processing Center

      104 Brookeridge Drive #5000

      Waterloo, IA 50702

The preparer will receive the PTIN number in four to six weeks.
