Use a dehumidifier when an area is 55 percent or higher in humidity. Make sure there are no constantly wet areas around where people and pets live. Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil may be effective in killing black mold on porous surfaces. Bleach only works to kill mold on non-porous surfaces. When in doubt hire a professional to remove and kill black mold.

    • Black mold spores can travel through the air, on clothing as well as on a pet's fur. Bathe animals thoroughly in a disinfecting shampoo. Clean all hard surfaces with a strong bleach solution.
