How to Completely Erase Your Computer
- 1). Unplug the cables from the back of your computer. Remove the screws that hold the side panel in place with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the side panel.
- 2). Unplug the data and power cables from the hard drive. Remove the screws holding the hard drive in place with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Slide the hard drive out of the computer case.
- 3). Unplug the cables from the back of the second computer. Open the side panel by removing the screws from the back of the computer. Remove the side panel and set it aside.
- 4). Configure the jumpers on the hard drive in the second computer to "Master" or "Primary" and set the hard drive jumpers on the drive you want to erase to "Slave" or "Secondary." Plug the "Slave" drive into the second computer. If the hard drives are IDE, plug in the drives on the same data cable. If the hard drives are SATA, ignore the jumper configuration steps and plug in the drive to the "SATA 2" motherboard connection.
- 5). Plug in the power cables to the hard drives. Plug the cables back into the back of the second computer and turn the power on. Allow the operating system to load completely. Click the "Start" menu button and choose "Computer." Verify that both drives are present and have assigned drive letters. If both drives are not present, power down the computer and check all connections and jumper settings, then power the computer on again.
- 6). Download and install "Active Kill Disk Free Suite." (See Resources)
- 7). Click the "Start" menu and choose "All Programs." Click the "Active Kill Disk Free Suite" program group and choose "Active Kill Disk for Windows."
- 8). Place a check in the box next to the hard drive on which you want to completely erase all information. Typically, this will be labeled "Hard Disk 1." Click to open the drive and verify that the drive you have selected contains the contents that you wish to erase. You cannot undo the disk-erasing process once it has started.
- 9). Click the "Kill" button at the top of the program window. Click to select the "US Air Force 5020" disk wipe method from the drop-down menu for a government-level disk-erasing process. Click the "Start" button to start the disk-erasing process.

Remove the cables from the back of the computer. Unplug and remove the "Slave" hard drive (the drive that has been erased) from the computer. If the computer has an IDE drive, reset the device drivers on the "Master" hard drive to "Single" or "Cable Select." Replace the side panel and fasten it into place with the Phillips-head screwdriver and the screws removed in Step 3. Plug in the cables to the back of the second computer. - 12
Configure the hard drive jumpers on the erased drive, if needed, so that it will run as the "Master" hard drive in the first computer. Install the hard drive into the first computer, fastening it into place with the screws removed in Step 2. - 13
