A breakthrough in cancer treatment may be just over the horizon. Three major pharmaceutical companies (Merck, Roche & Sanofi) have joined together to test whether new drugs can work to attack a wide range of cancer by attacking a gene which causes cancerous tumor growth. Currently, there are different classes of drugs on the market to treat various kinds of cancers. However, scientists are finding that there are many similarities in different types of cancer and scientists may be able to find a medication which would be able to attack this one gene. The biggest upside could be for patients with rare forms of cancers for which there are few treatment options. Some cancers are so rare that drug companies don't even manufacture the pharmaceuticals to treat it because the pool of patients is so small, it's just not cost effective for the drug companies. It could also help patients which have more than one type of cancer. Doctors often have difficulty treating these types of patients because of drug interactions. Advocacy groups are saying it could also help non-profit research groups. Instead of fund raising for one type of cancer, charities could all band together under one fund raising banner. Good for them, it's extremely difficult to raise money in this environment. We are currently in the midst of a major fund raising event between now and year-end. I am proud that we were chosen by Monterey County Weekly as one of the charities highlighted in their annual Monterey County Gives program. If you can afford to give, please donate via the below web site as there are matching funds available via this great program. The way it works is, there is $100,000 in matching funds and it will be divided pro-rata amongst the participating organizations based on how much they raise. So please help us stay in the top ten fundraisers by clicking here.

About Richard Kuehn & Hands to Help Seniors:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member, it became clear to me that there are many seniors that can't afford to pay for a private duty caregiver, not to mention medical expenses, food and property taxes on their home. I decided to form a non-profit to help seniors with any service they might need to get by, should they be unable to afford this themselves. From putting on a new roof to providing a hot meal, Hands to Help Seniors is there to help. Please visit my blog where I talk about important senior issues at:
