WWE SummerSlam 2012 PPV Recap and Results
- SummerSlam took place on August 19, 2012, at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. Please note that next to every wrestler's name, I have put their won-loss record at this event in parenthesis.
Pre-show Match for the US Championship: Champion Santino Marella (1-0) vs. Antonio Cesaro (0-0) - The challenger was accompanied to the ring by Aksana. Santino took too long to put on the Cobra and Antonio wound up kicking the sock into the corner.
A few minutes later, Antonio destroyed the Cobra. However, Santino had a spare one but before he could unleash it on Antonio, Santino and the Cobra were distracted by Aksana. Antonio then hit the Neutralizer to get the win. Winner and New Champion: Antonio Cesaro
- Also during the pre-show, WWE COO Triple H informed the referee for his upcoming match that his match with Brock Lesnar was now going to be a fight to the finish and that the only way it could end would be by pin fall or submission. It was also announced that Shawn Michaels would be watching that match from home because he suffered a broken arm at the hands of Brock Lesnar last week.
- The announcers for the show were Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole.
Chris Jericho (3-5) vs. Dolph Ziggler (0-1-1) - Vickie Guerrero was at ringside for Dolph Ziggler. Jericho entered the ring with his ribs taped up due to Dolph's attack on him this past Friday night. Jericho's rib injury came into play when it cost him to much time to cover Dolph after hitting him with a Frankensteiner off the top rope.
Dolph was very close to victory after catching Chris with his knees when he tried for the Lionsault and then hit the Zig Zag. After kicking out at 2, Chris hit Ziggler with the Code Breaker but the momentum from the move knocked him out of the ring. When he got back into the ring, Chris made Dolph tap out to the Walls of Jericho. Winner: Chris Jericho
Kane (6-3-1) vs. Daniel Bryan (1-1) - Kane went crazy after Daniel Bryan slapped him in the face. Kane's anger opened things up for Daniel Bryan but he was unable to apply the No Lock. Daniel Bryan went for a flying head butt off the top rope but Kane grabbed him by the throat when he landed and then gave him the choke slam. Kane was still angry about the slap and decided to give him the tombstone instead of going for the win. Daniel Bryan was able to reverse the move and rolled up the Big Red Monster to get the win. Following the match, Kane was shown tearing apart the backstage area while searching for Daniel Bryan. Winner: Daniel Bryan
Intercontinental Championship: Champion The Miz (0-1) vs. Rey Mysterio (4-4) - Rey was dressed in a Batman-inspired outfit. Rey was able to hit the 619 but missed when he tried to Drop the Dime. A few moments later, Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale to get the win. Winner: The Miz
- CM Punk confronted RAW General Manager AJ about putting him in a Triple Threat Match. AJ seemed to be in a catatonic state during his spiel.
World Heavyweight Championship: Champion Sheamus (0-2) vs. Alberto Del Rio (1-1) - Ricardo Rodriguez, the personal ring announcer for Alberto Del Rio, was at ringside for this match. Early in the match, the padding to the top ring rope came off. During the bout, Sheamus accidentally rammed his arm into the ring post on the other side of the ring. Alberto was able to apply the Cross Arm Breaker but Sheamus was able to power out of it. Sheamus was able to follow hat with the White Noise but was only able to get a 2-count. Sheamus stood on the ropes pounding on Alberto bt fell onto the exposed turnbuckle. Alberto then hit Sheamus with a kick and only got a 2 count. Alberto flipped out and "attacked" his ring announcer. When the referee came to his aid, Ricardo threw his shoe to Alberto but Sheamus caught it and used it on Alberto. Sheamus then hit the Irish Curse Back Breaker. Alberto put his foot on the rope but the referee didn't see it and Sheamus knocked it off after the 3 count was made. Winner: Sheamus
WWE Tag Team Championship: Champions R-Truth (1-1) & Kofi Kingston (1-1-1) vs. Darren Young (0-1) & Titus O'Neil (0-0) - The STAPLES Center crowd started a Kobe Bryant chant because AW, the former manager of the Prime Time Players, was recently fired for making an inappropriate Kobe Bryant joke. Kofi got rid of Titus O'Neill with a flying body press outside of the ring. Inside of the ring, R-Truth hit the Lie Detector on Darren Young to get the win. Winners: R-Truth & Kofi Kingston
Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship: Champion CM Punk (3-3) vs. John Cena (4-4) vs. Big Show (4-0) - Big Show dominated the the match but Cena and Punk were able to eventually wear him down. Punk put Show trapped Show's head in a move with his legs while Cena put Show in the STF. Show tapped out. Because of the confusion over who won the match, AJ came to the ring and restarted the match. Cena was able to hit Show with the Attitude Adjustment. Punk then tossed Cena out of the ring and jumped on top of Show to get the win. Winner: CM Punk
- Kevin Rodolf performed Don't Give Up which was the official theme song of the event. The Divas came out on stage to dance with him.
Brock Lesnar (1-1) vs. Triple H (8-4) - Paul Heyman was in the corner of Brock Lesnar for this match. Lesnar was focused on the arm of Triple H which he broke a few months ago. He slammed Triple H on his arm on top of the announcers table. The referee refused to start the count when Triple H was outside of the ring. Brock controlled the match until Triple H tossed him stomach-first into the announcers table. Brock has had some major problems with his stomach that led to him retiring from UFC. After many knees to the gut, Triple H hit Brock with the Pedigree but was only able to get a 2 count. Brock got back into the bout with a blatant low blow. He then connected with the F5 but Triple H was able to kick out. Brock then put Triple H in the Kimora Lock and refused to break it when Triple H reached the ropes. Triple H got out with a few shots to the body and the hit another Pedigree. When he went for the pin, Brock put Triple H in the Kimora Lock again and Triple H tapped out. Following the match, Triple H acted in such a way that the announcers were questioning whether he was going to retire. Winner: Brock Lesnar
What does this event mean for the future?
With Brock Lesnar beating Triple H, the big questions now are who and when he will fight next. I'm going to guess that Shawn Michaels will want revenge and his arm will heal by the time Survivor Series rolls around.
As far as the two world title matches go, both ended with some controversy. I can easily see Alberto demanding a rematch for the World Heavyweight Championship. And as far as CM Punk goes, he still can't be happy because he still has yet to fight in the final match of any show this year. His demands for respect will only get worse from here.
Overall Thoughts
I give this one a thumb's in the middle. Nothing was bad but nothing was so memorable that I'd go out of my way to watch it again. For the second biggest show of the year, that has to be considered a disappointment.
