Learning to Treat Your Subscriptions like Pending Conversions

105 13
Now that you have some subscriptions to your site, you’re starting to feel pretty comfortable in having a contact base. That is when the bug sets in; you get that urge to abuse your list. You may not think of it as abuse, but you need to think of it from the subscriber’s standpoint. Even if you are sending out freebies, if you are contacting them daily then you make be reaching out to them more often than their own loved ones. When you saturate a user’s email box, that opt-out button becomes more attractive.

In All Things, Moderation

If you are pushing away your subscribers by over-marketing, then you are breaking down your opt-in list by the moment. You need to do some damage control. What should you do? Stop. It’s as easy as that. Don’t send another blast for a couple of weeks if you know that you’ve been over the top, this will keep you from triggering that final knee-jerk reaction from the customers that have been seeing you every day. Next, change your concept to a more robust and professional newsletter that is sent weekly, or every other week. This gives them something to look forward to rather than an inbox full of junk mail.

Always Say Thank-You

Remember that your opt-in list wants the subscription to your mailing list to be beneficial to them. What do you do? Sweeten the deal. Add sweepstakes, insert a survey with results in the upcoming issue (readers love their views to be heard), slip in coupons and freebies, or even customer reviews and editorials, and always end your mailer with a thank you. When your subscribers feel that you value them as well as respect their inbox you will have a happy readership. What this means is longer standing subscriber relationships, leading to more loyal customers and greater conversions.

Exciting Content, Not Inflammatory

If you want your opt-ins to stay happy and active, don’t give them a reason to leave. Sure, if you mention something controversial you may see an upsurge in the membership from some, but you’ll definitely see the numbers plummet from others. You have just eliminated some of your demographic from your list just because you couldn’t contain yourself. Unless your primary product deals in politics, race, religion, pornography, or similarly controversial topics, don’t bring them up in your mailers. No matter what buzz you generate, it will soon die and take your subscribers with it.
