What Helps With ADHD? Sorting Out What Could Be Really Useful For Your ADHD Child

We were talking on the beach to-day about how useful pet therapy can be for the treatment of depression. The same goes of course for treatment of ADHD in children as nearly every child I know, adores animals. In these cases, what helps with ADHD is called animal assisted therapy (AAT) and has been developed in Europe, Australia and America.

In the case of ADHD, domestic pets are used to help children manage their ADHD symptoms much more effectively and productively. First the therapist in charge of the program will note the particular problems an ADHD child may have. That could be impulsivity, hyperactivity or distractive behavior, violent aggressive behavior or simply lacking focus and unable to concentrate on any tasks. This will help in defining what the objectives should be aimed at in following an AAT course.

Just as children talk to dolls and teddy bears, they will also willingly talk to an animal and tell them what they are going through. If a child is going through a difficult patch, she will talk to the pet about it much more readily and openly than with the therapist or even with the parents or teachers.

What helps with ADHD treatment of this type is that children while doing this type of therapy in groups, will definitely learn to improve social skills, turn taking and general socializing, which are often difficult for ADHD children. AAT is obviously not suitable for children who may be allergic to animals.

What helps with ADHD impulsive behavior? This is a very difficult area because an ADHD child just cannot stop and think of the consequences which is usually the first thing we think about before we dive in, go through a red traffic light and all the other actions where impulsivity can be very tempting.

Fortunately a board game has been developed which can really help with ADHD children and help them actually learn through playing about the consequences of impulsive actions. After all, children learn through playing extensively and this board game will be no exception. The game is built around the actions a child is invited to take. There are just three options which are called STOP, where the child is asked to think about the other option. Then second one is where they have to REWIND and that means thinking about what happened the last time they behaved like that. Finally they have the option of FAST FORWARD where they can think about what the consequences of their actions are likely to be.
