How to Make an Origami Bed
- 1). Cut 2 square pieces of paper 8-by-8 inches. Set one page aside to form the sheet.
- 2). Lay the paper right-side down. Fold it in half horizontally. Open the fold and rotate the sheet so that the fold is vertical. Fold the page in half horizontally. Open the fold. The paper will now have two valley folds that segment the paper in quarters.
- 3). Fold the lower edge of the paper up so that the edge of the sheet is halfway to the horizontal center fold. Crease the fold.
- 4). Fold the lower edge up to meet the horizontal center fold.
- 5). Fold the upper edge of the paper down so that it is halfway to the center fold.
- 6). Fold the upper edge which is folded down to meet the horizontal center fold.
- 7). Open all folds and spread the sheet on the table; the paper is divided into six vertical strips by valley folds.
- 8). Reverse fold the first and sixth strips -- the top and bottom edges of the page -- so that they are folded onto the opposite side of the paper and not visible.
- 9). Fold the top and bottom edge of the page to the horizontal center fold. Make sure the edges line up in the center of the page. Crease all folds to form a folded strip; the strip will have three layers with the free edge of the top layer pointing outward.
- 10
Rotate the folded strip so that it is longer vertically. - 11
Make a triangular fold in the lower right and left corners. Fold the corner up so that the bottom edge of the folded strip meets the center fold; be sure to lift all three layers of paper. Crease the triangular folds and then open them. There will be two valley folds that form a V. - 12
Locate the two corners of the folded paper in the center of the V; the corners are formed by two layers of paper. Fold the leftmost corner up so that the bottom edge of the paper meets the left side of the folded strip forming a triangular fold. Repeat on the right side. Crease both triangular folds and then open them. - 13
Grip the top layer of paper in the lower left corner. Place your finger on top of the crease in the center of the folded strip while pulling the layer up; the corner will open and the second layer of paper will extend as well. Line up the bottom edge of the paper with the left edge of the page. Work with the paper to fold along the lines you made earlier. There will be a triangular piece on the left edge of the paper pointing towards the right; the innermost point of the triangle will not be attached to the paper but will flap freely. Also, there will be a sharp fold marking the horizontal center of the triangle. Repeat on the right side of the folded strip. - 14
Rotate the paper so that the folded end is at the top and repeat Steps 11 through 13 on the opposite end. - 15
Lay the strip vertically again. Fold the edge of the paper up so that it is in line with the center of the left and right triangular pieces. Fold the loose innermost points of the triangle down over the folded edge of the paper. Crease the fold lightly but allow the triangular flap to remain upright; this forms the lower legs of the bed. - 16
Rotate the paper so that the finished legs are at the top of the folded strip. - 17
Lift the paper off of the table. Lift the loose triangular flaps; this will cause the upper edge of the page to fold towards the other side as the headboard and allow the triangles to stick out forming the other legs of the bed. - 18
Flip the bed over so that the legs are pointing downward. - 1). Cut an 8-by-8 inch square of paper.
- 2). Lay the paper right-side down. Fold the lower-right corner up to meet the upper left corner, folding the page in half diagonally. Open the fold.
- 3). Fold all four corners to the center of the paper using the diagonal fold as a guide. Flip the paper over.
- 4). Repeat Step 3 twice.
- 5). Turn the paper so that the folded corners divide the sheet vertically and horizontally, not diagonally. Slide a finger under the tip of one folded section and push it up to meet the corner of the page. The folded section will unfold and form a flat rectangular tube around the corner of the page. Repeat for all corners; the finished base will resemble a cross.
- 6). Fold three points of the cross down to form the base. Fold the fourth section up to form a headboard.
- 1). Lay a paper right-side down. Fold the paper in half horizontally. Open the fold.
- 2). Fold the lower half of the paper in half horizontally so that the bottom edge meets the valley fold in the middle of the page.
- 3). Fold the upper half of the paper in half horizontally so that the upper edge meets the valley fold in the middle of the page and is in line with the bottom edge of the page.
- 4). Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to fold the lower and upper sections of the paper in half again.
- 5). Open all folds. The page will be divided into eight sections. Lay the paper right-side up with the folds running vertically.
- 6). Reverse-fold the rightmost section so that the paper is folded towards the undecorated side of the sheet. Fold the leftmost section over towards the middle of the sheet.
- 7). Fold the paper in half bringing the bottom edge to the top. Crease the fold and fold the paper in half again the same way. Undo this second fold.
- 8). Ensure that the folded edge is at the bottom. Fold the bottom edge up one-quarter of the way to the top. Rotate the paper so that the bottom edge is made of two distinct layers of paper. Fold the bottom edges up the same distance as the previous fold.
