The Height of a Semi-Dwarf Montmorency Cherry
- Expect a healthy Montmorency cherry tree to mature 12 to 18 feet tall with a spreading branch canopy 10 to 15 feet wide. Older specimens may eventually reach nearly 20 feet tall and 20 feet wide.
- The Montmorency cherry tree benefits from annual late-winter maintenance pruning to remove dead and diseased branches and to ensure a uniform structure. Iowa State University recommends training the tree when it's young to have three or four main branches.
- Prune to remove the narrow-crotched branches on tart cherry tree varieties like Montmorency -- those with crotch angles of less than 30 degrees. Do not harshly tip-prune or coppice the tree to maintain a shorter or narrower height.
