How Long Do I Refrigerate Hyancinth Bulbs Before Planting?

    Why Refrigerate Hyacinth Bulbs?

    • Hyacinths are spring bulbs and most of the spring bulbs do not have to be dug up unless it is for the purpose of propagation. This is also often done to ease overcrowding. However, when spring bulbs are left in the ground, the winters should be cold enough to render the bulbs dormant. This can be a problem in warmer climates where the winters are not cold enough. Hence, bulbs like hyacinth need to be dug up and stored over the winter in temperatures cold enough to allow for dormancy. Dig up hyacinth bulbs and refrigerate them for a few months, 10 to 12 weeks, at a temperature that is as close to a northern winter as possible.

    Tips on Planting

    • Hyacinth bulbs are planted in rich, well-drained soil, in either full sun or partial shade. It is recommended to place five bulbs per square foot. Plant them at a depth which is three times the bulb's width, cover with an inch of mulch and water them well. Don't mix in the fertilizer with the bulbs at the time of planting. Water the bulbs once a week through active growth and bloom time. Remove the mulch when the tops starts to show and the plants are allowed to grow in full sun.
