Finding Health Insurance for your Children

    • 1). Discuss insurance options with your human resources office or directly with your employer. How many hours must you work to be eligible for health insurance? Are there any options for part-time employees? Find out all of the facts before you check other options. If one spouse carried insurance for the family at their job, can an insurance policy be added at the other spouse's place of employment?

    • 2). Examine the program called Insure Kids Now! to see whether you are eligible for this health insurance for your children. Each state runs an Insure Kids Now! program (see References).

    • 3). Call your state or local health care department to see whether any additional insurance programs are available for you and your family. For example, the state of Illinois has recently started Illinois Health Connect through the Department of Health and Family Services. This program is designed to provide affordable insurance for you and your family (see Resources).

    • 4). Research the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). In this program, states administer this health care plan that is funded through the Department of Health and Human Services. This plan is optimal for families that do not qualify for Medicaid but are having difficulty obtaining health insurance for their children. For details on the CHIPs program, contact your state health department. Each state lists their information and requirements separately.

    • 5). Ask about Medicaid insurance options. This insurance will cover you and your entire family. Depending on circumstances, it might even cover unrelated children living in your household (see References).

    • 6). Find an insurance broker to discuss your insurance needs. Insurance brokers sell insurance policies to individuals and businesses. They will be able to assist you in comparing private insurance policy options for your children (see Resources).

    • 7). Contact major insurance carriers directly to discuss insurance options (see Resouces).
