How to Obtain a Disability Parking Permit

    • 1). Determine if you are eligible. Review the eligibility guidelines for disabled parking permits in your state. According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), disability requirements include visual impairments and "mobility problems that substantially impair a person's ability to move around." (See Reference 1.) For specific guidelines in your state, check with your physician or local DMV office.

    • 2). Get an application. A disability parking permit application can be acquired at your local DMV. You can also download an application from any DMV website or ask your doctor for one.

    • 3). Visit your doctor. Your physician will be required to fill out the "Disability Statement" portion of your parking permit application. Bring your application to your doctor and ask him to the complete the form for you.

    • 4). Complete the rest of the application. You will be required to provide your name, address, phone number, and vehicle information.

    • 5). Submit the application with payment. Your application should be submitted to your local tax collector's office. There will be an application fee, which varies by state. You will also need to bring a driver's license or other proof of identity.
