Hydatid Disease of the Kidney: A Retrospective Review of 13 Cases
Echinococcosis is an insidious hydatid disease, with infestation sites mainly in the liver and lungs but also in the kidney. This retrospective study reviews the diagnosis of and therapy for echinococcosis in 13 patients between 1982 and 1998. Although there are a variety of treatment options available, surgery (nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, cyst excision) was the choice for all 13 patients. The merits of marsupialization and cyst evacuation are also discussed.

Echinococcal disease is an infestation endemic to areas of sheep and cattle raising and, therefore, to Turkey. The tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus, forms larval cysts most commonly in the liver. Although hydatid disease of the kidney is uncommon, it still constitutes about 2% to 3% of cases of hydatid disease. Surgical and nonsurgical treatment options are available when the kidney is affected. Assessment of the efficacy of surgical modalities is the main focus of this retrospective analysis.
