How to Dry Basement Carpet
- 1). Identify and stop the cause of what made the carpet wet. It does no good to dry your carpet if it's just going to become wet again.
- 2). Dry out your basement with fans and dehumidifiers. Place box fans in windows and blow dry air into the room. If it's humid outside, turn fans around and have them blow out of the basement. Turn on any ceiling fans in your basement.
- 3). Suck up as much water as possible from the carpet with a wet/dry vacuum. You can also soak up water from the carpet with rags, old towels and newspapers.
- 4). Lift up the carpet and examine its padding. The padding may be salvagable if the leak came from above the carpet. If the leak was through the floor, the padding will almost certainly have to be discarded. If you are going to have to remove the padding, you're also going to have to roll up the carpet. Take the carpet outside and dry it in the sun if you have enough manpower to carry it.
- 5). Place objects under the carpet to keep it off the floor. Aim floor fans so they blow air underneath the carpet. Continue running the fans until the bottom of the carpet is dry.
- 6). Aim box fans along the top side of the carpet until it is also dry.
