Dog Training Tips - How to Teach The Stay Command

103 1
Your dog can sit, lie down, and shake hands, but are you completely lost when trying to teach the stay command to your dog? Don't worry, many people have a hard time teaching their dog to stay, but it's not too hard if you take it a step at a time.
First, remember to take baby steps, and teach a small bit at at time, only having the dog "stay" for extremely short periods of time to begin with.
If you try to have him stay for too long at a time you'll end up taking one step forward and two steps back so to speak.
Also remember there are tons of methods to teach this so use what works for you.
But having said that, here is one way to do it.
Start with your dog in the "sit" position inside the house.
Then, tell him to "stay" while holding your hand up as if you are telling him to stop.
Now, keep your hand up and begin walking backward, just a small bit at a time.
If your dog starts to get up, correct him with a quick "no" or some other sound, and repeat the stay command.
Reward your dog for correct behavior.
Lengthen the amount of time you ask for the stay, and before long you'll be surprised how good he is doing.
Try going out a door or out of sight once you believe he is understanding what the command means.
Then just continue training for longer and longer periods.
Practice makes perfect.
Now you can go ahead and try doing this outside.
You may have to go back to the baby steps as there will be more distractions.
