- 1). Put on rubber, latex or vinyl gloves. These should be worn at all times when handling the stained garment until the clothes are removed from the washing machine.
- 2). Place the article of clothing outside in the sun. This is not a necessary step, but the ultraviolet rays from the sun deactivate hantaviruses.
- 3). Apply an enzyme-based laundry detergent directly to the stain.
- 4). Place the garment into the washing machine. Set the load size to large and the temperature as high as it will go. Fill the washing machine drum and then shut off the washer. Let the garment sit in the washing machine for one hour. The heat of the water also aids in deactivating hantaviruses.
- 5). Continue the wash cycle. Once it is finished, check the garment for any remaining stains. If the stain is still present, repeat the process.
- 6). Dry the garment at the highest temperature available. Once again, this will help in deactivating hantaviruses.
