If Your Child Has ADHD, Have You Had A Proper Diagnosis?

101 15
If you think that your child has ADHD, it may not be true at all because the symptoms are often confused with other conditions. In fact up to one million children nationwide may be misdiagnosed!

This is the conclusion that Todd Elder from Michigan State University came to after studying 12,000 children. He has estimated that Medicaid could have saved up to 90 million dollars in a whole year.

If his calculations are correct, the people at Medicaid must be scratching their heads, thinking how on earth this could have happened. But lots of doctors and indeed parents are convinced that over-diagnosis of ADHD is a real problem although we will never be able to get any hard statistics on this one.

If you are convinced that your child has ADHD, think again and make sure that you get a proper diagnosis. I say that because ADHD can mimic a whole series of other childhood conditions.

These can range from hearing difficulties, eyesight problems, thyroid deficiency and a whole list of other conditions. These include depression and anxiety because the child may be going through some trauma connected with school or family life.

Sometimes symptoms which are similar to ADHD such as restlessness, distractability and hyperactivity are the manifestations of a post traumatic stress.

I have just been reading a book called Sleep, Interrupted: A Physician Reveals The #1 Reason Why So Many Of Us Are Sick And Tired by Dr. Steven Park. This touches on many important issues about why sleep is so important for our whole well being. He mentions the problems of sleep apnea and many children who are misdiagnosed with ADHD, are actually suffering from this condition.

If a child has sleep apnea, this means that breathing could stop for a moment or two when sleeping and that means that the oxygen supply to the brain is interrupted. Classic symptoms include lack of attention and focus and being extremely irritable. Sound familiar? Well, if you think that your child has ADHD, it could just be sleep apnea.

This is why, if you think your child has ADHD, it is so important to get a proper diagnosis by a qualified practitioner. If indeed the ADHD diagnosis is confirmed, you will need to look at all the options. The most important one is to make sure that effective parenting skills are in place. You could also learn about why homeopathic remedies for ADHD are becoming so popular. I have built a website to explain all this, so why not check it out.
