Waldestinia Plant Care

104 1

    Planting

    • The best time to plant waldsteinia is during mid-spring, so the plant has a chance to establish itself before winter. Planting during the summer or fall will require an application of mulch immediately after the first freeze. Always plant waldsteinia at the same soil depth it was growing in the container.

Plant waldsteinia in soil with good drainage and in an area that receives partial to full sunlight. Till the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage if necessary. Water the area surrounding the plant thoroughly immediately after planting to pack the soil around the roots.

    Watering and Fertilization

    • Apply mulch to newly planted waldsteinia to help retain moisture. Waldsteinia plants growing in partial shade are highly drought tolerant and require almost no watering. Check the soil every one to two weeks to ensure it is slightly moist and water only if the soil is dust dry. Plants growing in full sunlight will require regular watering during dry spells, especially in summer months.

Very little fertilization is required. Flowering may be improved and rampant growth controlled by using a low nitrogen slow-release fertilizer. About one lb. of fertilizer should be used for every 100 square feet of soil. Fertilize during the spring to help the plant recover from any damage sustained during winter.

    Weeding

    • The only real threat is weeds. They can take the plant and take nutrients waldsteinia needs to survive. Remove any weeds by hand at the first opportunity. Yearly fertilization in spring will help the plant grow more quickly before weeds can take hold in the soil. Keeping mulch on the soil will also prevent the germination of weed seeds. A preemergent herbicide can be used to kill any weeds before they germinate, if desired.
