Cold and Flu Symptoms While Pregnant
- Because of decreased immune capacity, any cold or flu symptoms you may experience could last longer than usual.
- Drinking fluids can help thin nasal secretions. Water, chicken soup, tea and juice are all good choices.
- The use of over-the-counter medication is not recommended prior to the 12th week of pregnancy. After that time, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is acceptable.
- When you are suffering from nausea or diarrhea, it's important to maintain nutritional intake if possible. Try a clear liquid diet of broth, Jell-o, juice, and Popsicles if you are having trouble keeping food down.
- Call your physician if your illness results in a fever of more than 101 degrees. If you cough up green/yellow sputum or experience shortness of breath, persistent chest pain or severe sore throat, you should also call your doctor.
