Obesity is not something to be taken lightly because it requires more surgery and medications than other illnesses. You must also undergo a lot of changes in your lifestyle which includes diet and exercise. If you are overweight or would like to achieve a healthy body, you must know some facts regarding weight loss so that you would know how to do it properly.

The first thing to know about is your body mass index (BMI). BMI is the ratio of your body height and weight. It is correlated with body fat but other factors such as lean body mass or a large body frame can increase your BMI. The ideal BMI is 24 and people who have a BMI of less than 24 are at risk for problems related to poor nutritional status. On the other hand, those who have BMI of 25 to 29 are overweight and those with BMI of 30 to 39 are already obese. To calculate your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters.

Another thing to know is your basal metabolic rate or BMR, which represents the energy needed by the body to carry out the different physiological functions. Even if a person is inactive or at rest, he or she will still burn calories. This is because energy is needed to perform these essential functions. Some people lose weight faster than others because they have a faster metabolism or higher BMR.

Some people are very conscious with the amount of calories in the food that they eat. Calories are needed by our body to be able to perform its functions. It only becomes bad when taken in too much while living an inactive lifestyle. If a person does not have a lot of physical activity, the calories that they consumed will not be burned but stored as fat deposits. To lose weight, we should burn 3,500 calories more than we eat.
