How to Use Fieldstone As a Border Around Gardens
- 1). Remove the sod from the area where the border will be located with a spade or shovel.
- 2). Tamp the soil down in the excavated area with a hand tamper.
- 3). Pick out field stones that are 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Use smaller-sized stones for smaller gardens or for a cozy look. Use large stones for large gardens or for a rugged cabin feel. Use a mixture of small and larger stones for a natural look.
- 4). Set the stones side by side onto of the excavated earth to form a border around your garden. Set end stones in the corners of square or rectangle gardens and set the stones between them.
- 5). Place mulch on the inner and outer sides of the stones to help prevent weeds.
