    • 1). The branch that will be grafted onto another tree is known as the scion. Select the scion from a variety of tree that has the desired fruit. Scion wood should be chosen in the early winter when the tree is dormant and then stored in the refrigerator with some moist sphagnum moss.

    • 2). Cut the scion down the center for 3 inches and remove one side of the wood.

    • 3). On the rootstock, or destination tree, remove about 3 inches of bark to create an insertion point for the cut side of the scion. Make the cut roughly 2 feet from the ground in early spring.

    • 4). Insert the scion into the exposed area on the tree. Place two nails through the branch to hold it in place.

    • 5). Cover the entire graft with two coats of grafting compound to prevent infection and drying out of the grafting site.
