How to Convert a Gas RC Plane to Electric
- 1). Remove the gas engine from the plane. This includes all of the parts that are part of the gas engine such as the servo, fuel tank, push rods, fuel pump and fuel lines.
- 2). Remove the balancing weights. The new motor will not weigh the same, causing the balance point to be slightly different.
- 3). Mark off the center longitudinal point and the center of gravity balance point. Use a balancing jig to determine the center of gravity point. If no balancing jig is available, pick up the plane with your fingers. Depending on the size of the plane, place your finger a few inches up to a foot away from the fuselage. The plane is balanced when it is level from front to back.
- 4). Place the battery pack as close to the center of gravity as possible and place the new electric motor as close to the front of the plane as possible. Try to obtain a neutral balance.
- 5). Mount the battery with double-sided tape. Mount the motor with tape or screws. To ensure safe and proper operation of the propeller, it is important to center the motor. Position the battery pack and motor so they won't interfere with the servos, push rods or operation of the wings.
- 6). Check the balance and add balancing weights as needed.
