How to Troubleshoot a Whirlpool Special Edition Washing Machine

104 1

    Not Filling Properly

    • 1). Look at the settings on your Whirlpool's control panel to ensure that the knobs are not between settings. If the water level knob is set between "medium" and "large," it can cause the machine to fail to fill with water.

    • 2). Locate and turn off the hot and cold water shut-off valves on the wall behind the machine. Remove the hoses from the machine with pliers and then turn the valves on. Hold a bucket under the hoses to catch water. If water does not come out, the issue is with the water shut-off valves.

    • 3). Remove the screws from the front lower panel with a screwdriver. Pull up and out on the panel to remove it from the machine. Locate the wiring harness that connects to the inlet valve. Plug it in if unplugged.

    • 4). Locate the two black hoses that connect to the water inlet valve. Turn the Whirlpool washing machine on and listen for a humming sound. If you hear any sound coming from the inlet valve, the valve is likely defective.

    Leaking

    • 1). Inspect the water shut-off valves and each coupler located on the end of each hose. The couplers have washers that will wear out over time.

    • 2). Check the drainpipe where it goes into the back of the Whirlpool washer. Look for holes in the hose or pooled water where the hose goes into the machine. This indicates a poor seal between the hose and the pump.

    • 3). Remove the screws from the front lower panel with a screwdriver. Pull up and out on the panel to remove it from the machine. Turn on the machine and run a cycle. Check for leaks at the water pump and where the hoses connect to the water inlet valve.

    • 4). Look for water backing up from the standpipe, which is what the Whirlpool washer's drainpipe goes into. It can back up with lint and force drain water up and out of the standpipe.

    Power Issues

    • 1). Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker. If tripped, turn it back on and then attempt to run the machine again. If it trips again, consult a licensed electrician to trace the short in the electrical circuit.

    • 2). Disconnect the Whirlpool washer from the electrical outlet. Plug in another working appliance. If the appliance works, the electrical circuit is working properly. Plug the washer back in.

    • 3). Lift up the lid and locate the lid switch. If the lid switch is defective, that will prevent the machine from coming on. Pry the switch cover off with a screwdriver, pull the switch out and disconnect the wires from it.

    • 4). Measure continuity in the switch with a multimeter. Place the leads from the multimeter on each end. Position the meter on "OHM," press the switch in and watch the reading. If it stays on zero, the switch is faulty. If it shows any other number, the switch works correctly. If the switch works, consult Whirlpool about a warranty repair, as the issue is likely with the control panel.
