How to Get Rid of Human Urine Smell
- 1). Be quick. The best way to get rid of the smell of urine is to clean it up quickly, before it penetrates or soaks into whatever surface it happens to be on. If you are potty training, make sure you check your child for accidents regularly so they can be quickly addressed. If he has repeat accidents throughout the day, baby wipes may not be enough to eliminate the smell entirely.
- 2). Change and wash your child's clothing if it is covered in urine. Immediately remove wet clothing and wash it in the washing machine with laundry detergent as soon as possible. If the garments have been soaked with urine for an extended period of time, soak them in the washing machine with detergent before running the cycle. If you do not have immediate access to a washer, place the wet garments in a bag that can be sealed or tied.
- 3). Bathe your child. Give your child a bath with soap and water if he had an accident and has been wet for an extended period of time.
- 4). Remove the smell from the couch or carpet. If your child has an accident on the carpet or couch, you will want to soak it up with a paper towel as soon as possible. Pour enough hydrogen peroxide onto the soiled area to sufficiently cover it. Hydrogen peroxide will clean any organic substance. Soak up the excess liquid with a paper towel. You may want to follow up by spraying the area with an odor-eliminating spray such as Febreze.
- 5). Clean your bathroom regularly. Use a toilet bowl cleaner such as Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner to clean the inside of the bowl at least once a week. Let it soak for ten minutes, then use a scrub brush to clean the inside of the toilet. Use a disinfectant spray such as Lysol to spray the seat of the toilet. Dry it with a paper towel. Mop the floor around the toilet two times a week with a disinfectant floor cleaner.
